HANDS ON: THE NICE GUY MACHINE CO SLEEPER ISN’T TO BE SLEPT ON

Last time I checked, EDC essentials, like most things, aren’t getting any cheaper. In recent years, all things have steadily been climbing in price making most have to think about budgeting with the things they love. Everyday carry essentials haven’t been immune to the uptick in pricing. If you’re spending your money, you want to know what you’re buying is capable of conquering the challenges you throw its way and will stand the test of time. That’s where Nice Guy Machine Co comes in. They have been a consistent creator within the EDC space for some time now and have developed quite the cult following and for good reason. It helps when an audience knows what to expect from a company in terms of consistent quality and usability.

The Sleeper pry bar is a titanium pry just like the overwhelming backlog of Nice Guy models. I have experienced most every piece that has come out of his shop and you can see the natural development of his pieces. These have some definite influences that are glaringly apparent. The shape and thickness come from the main influence - their Ladyfinger Thumb model. It has a strong and wide pry edge that looks like it was modeled after the thumb of Andre the Giant. Some pry bars are just an excuse to have some high polish piece of metal that you can show off without much practical application. The Sleeper is the pry bar’s pry bar. The generous length allows for appropriate leverage for your everyday prying needs that the tiny prys cannot. The second influence we find here is in the engraving. The fingerprint style has been used sparingly throughout some special edition variations in the past and has also made an appearance on their worry stone as of late. The fingerprint grooves have the same functionality of the ones we find on our own fingers. They provide superior grip and a tactile feel that makes you feel one with this pry piece. On top of that, it just looks cool. The last piece of the Frankenstein like creation of this pry is the pocket clip. One of Nice Guy’s most popular items that is adjacent to the pry bars are his Chris Reeve replacement pocket clips. He machined a pocket clip to be used on Chris Reeve knives that suited his carry needs. It seems that his opinions of the stock CRK clips were shared by many. He has always sold these pieces individually to be installed by the buyer. In this case he has pre-installed them onto this pry making it even more unique.

The Sleeper comes in large and small sizes, each with their own fun nickname. The large Sleeper is called Boris. A name that sounds robust and strong. The small sleeper is named Doris. Still an aggressive sounding name but feels a little lighter than the Boris. The smaller size still isn’t a small pry bar. It offers the same functionality found in its larger brother. Both will fall into the pecking order of your everday carry nicely. Their stonewashed finish allows for some ease of mind when it comes to scratching. These are pry bars meant to be used and will only look better as time goes on.
