An ode to my Grandfather: WWII Memorabillia

Mitchell Orizaba McClain (1922-1999) served in World War 2 from 1943-1945. He was a sergeant in the Signal Corps. Following the end of the war, he stayed in Europe for six months aiding in the reconstruction of many of the towns that were destroyed. He was also a part of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp as well as D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. Working in the signal corps, they supplied telephone and telegraph wire lines. They were also responsible for combat photography. We have hundreds of photos that he took throughout the war. This is a small selection of memorabilia and photos.

Various “War Trophies.” Not all of these would have been acquired by him. Alot of the time they would trade pieces like this. The last two pictures show pendants that would have been found on Calvary Officer uniform hats.

More of the same.

Many of the photos are addressed to my grandmother Gwen. We also have countless letters that he sent to her throughout the war.
